Following private equity activity with an evidence trail

A disciplined deal watch distinguishes announced investments, completed transactions and an investor's actual role.

Public transaction announcements can help readers follow private capital activity. Their value improves when the record is structured and the original announcement remains attached.

Define the event

A useful record starts with the company, named investors, announcement date and the type of event. A proposed acquisition, a completed acquisition, a financing round and a fund commitment are different events and should be labeled accordingly.

The investor's role also matters. Participating in a round, leading a financing and controlling a business are not interchangeable descriptions.

Preserve what the source does not disclose

If an announcement gives the total size of a round but does not disclose each participant's investment, the total should not be attributed to every investor. An undisclosed valuation or check size should remain undisclosed.

Build a watchlist before an index

The Review's proposed transaction record includes the announcement link, event date, status, company, named investor, sector and disclosed amounts. Deduplication should identify when several publications describe the same event.

Any future activity table will describe transactions captured within the Review's coverage and time window. Its methodology will explain which events qualify and how coverage gaps are handled. It will not claim that a more frequently mentioned investor is a better performer.

What is available today

The founding edition provides explainers and sourced firm profiles. A live deal feed is not yet populated. This article sets out the editorial method for that extension; it does not report a newly verified transaction.
